Upcoming Game Changer Class

Just a reminder that the Game Changer fly tying class is this Saturday at FlyMasters of Indianapolis.  Blane Chocklett’s Game Changer has been around for about 6 or 7 years now and seems to not be slowing down in the amount of interest it is stirring up in the fly fishing community.  With the Game Changer Shanks by FlyMen Fishing Co. it is a simple process of making your own Game Changers for your favorite waters.  That said, there is a particular method to tying these flies that does make the entire process easier and less time consuming.  Like most things in life, doing it the wrong way will not only take longer but you will be more frustrated with the process as well as the results.  Come attend the class this Saturday to see how these flies are tied and then you can add your own finesse to your own Game Changers.

The Class starts at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday and must start on time.  Even though the class is three hours it will just give us enough time to tie the one Game Changer and a Game Changer Jr.  The Game Changer Jr. is a smaller version for those who don’t need to be slinging around a 4 1/2 inch streamer.  Most of our baitfish in central Indiana are from 1 to 2 inches in length (on average).  The Game Changer Jr. was created to fit that niche.  I am not taking any sort of credit here for the Game Changer Jr. as it is still a Game Changer fly and I did not develop this particular streamer tying style.  I simply made it shorter.  That said, there will be lots of discussion about how the Game Changers are tied, how to modify them by changing the articulation, the materials and even how some of the materials are tied in.  I will have some samples of other types of Game Changers in class (think the new Micro Game Changers!) and I will include lots of Internet links to all sorts of information on the Game Changer and it’s many variations.

As mentioned in a previous post, the materials for the class are all provided.  There are a few things each fly tier will need to bring.  They are,

  • Tying Vise
  • Thread (White UTC in 140 and 210 Denier)
  • A sharp pair of scissors, preferably with a long throat
  • Head Cement
  • Bodkin
  • Regular hair comb (if you have one)
  • Paper and pencil for notes
  • Smartphone or camera for taking photos

In the other post about the class I mentioned bringing a smart phone or a camera.  This is so you can take photos of the various types of Game Changers as well as document your own fly as you tie it.  Plus, bring along a pen/pencil and maybe some paper to take notes.  You can always take notes on your handout but that might not be enough space.  There will be a lot of instruction as well as information and ideas shared in this class so you will want to maximize your time while in class.

The cost of the class is only $35.00 and the class will last for approximately 3 hours.  Depending on the number of people in the class and the number of questions, the class could go over three hours.  All in all, it will be a fun class at a great fly shop with great people.  Or,… you could stare out the window at the snow all afternoon, up to you.  Hope to see you behind the vise!
