Smallmouth Crayfish Flies in June

I have had numerous requests this winter for a smallmouth crawdad/crayfish class.  I have a class each month already set up through March, April, May and I will be adding a smallmouth crawdad or crayfish class in June 2020.  Here in Central Indiana we are pretty much smallmouth country and they are in almost every stream and body of water in the entire state.  Crawdads are huge part of their diet during summer time.  Crawdads will come out sometime late April or early May and by the end of May and June they’re spawning; different species spawn at different times.  Throughout the summer there are various species of crayfish spawning or molting and active into late September or early October.   They are a big part of the Smallmouth Bass’ diet.

I have planned (so far) three flies for this class.  Each can represent different stages of a crayfish’s life as well as target Smallies in different water conditions.  The three patterns are the Clouser Crayfish (a great soft craw pattern), the Skips Dad (an excellent  shallow water sight fishing fly) and the Ball Peen Craw which is a great searching pattern.  Each pattern approaches the use of crawdad/crayfish patterns differently.  All use different materials and tying techniques to ultimately represent a crayfish and fool a Smallmouth into biting.  In the past, this class has been one of my most popular classes.  Especially here in central Indiana where Smallmouth Bass are stalked like others stalk trout in other places!

The class will be June 6th at 1:00 p.m.   It will continue until 4:00 p.m. in the afternoon.  The cost of the class is $35.00.  I will have a post up as we get close to the date with more details about what tools and what things each tier will need to bring.  This is mostly just to inform people that I’ve added another class in June.  If you haven’t signed up for the Dressed Irons newsletter you can on the right side.  Put your name email address in the fields tot he right and subscribe to the newsletter.  That’s the best way to stay up-to-date and informed on the different classes and what’s going on with Dressed Irons.  As time draws near I’ll have more information.  Mark your calendar, I hope to see you in June.
