In last weeks video, on the Black Turkey, I mentioned that the Black Turkey is very similar to the Leadwing Coachman. After doing that video I realized many tiers might not know about the Leadwing Coachman let alone how it is tied so I decided to do a video on it. The primary focus is to show the similarities and differences between the two flies. Since the Leadwing Coachman is a wet fly that has been around for many years (about 150 years if my research is correct) I will assume the Black Turkey was born from aspects of the Leadwing Coachman and not the other way around.
Which is also something I am fond of pointing out; many flies found their beginnings in other flies. If you are interested in flies and their history, I recommend a book I am currently ready by Ian Whitelaw titled, The History of Fly-Fishing in Fifty Flies. You will be amazed to find where some of the classic patterns have their origins as well as a number of modern flies and fly fishing techniques. But, I am getting off topic. While you watch the video on the Leadwing Coachman think about the Black Turkey (if you haven’t seem it yet go watch it now).
The fly itself is not difficult to tie and has no more steps and materials than the Black Turkey. It is a wonderful fly for those getting started in tying wet flies. Especially if you are wanting to master matched wings or matched and married wings. The materials are easy to obtain so you can practice a great deal to learn and be comfortable with the wings. Although the Leadwing Coachman was tied to imitate emerging Caddis it can imitate a number of live or dead insects. Which makes the fly not only good for trout but an excellent panfish fly. Casting this fly along structure and weeds on your favorite panfish pond and It won’t disappoint you. – Enjoy.
