Tying Video – It’s-A-Bug

Many moons ago, Fly Tyer magazine had an article on a new little panfish fly called It’s-A-Bug (it was the 2001 spring issue if you want to look for it).  My first thought was not only would it be a great panfish fly but in a larger size with some legs and it could be a killer Smallmouth Bass fly.  I immediately got what I needed together to tie some and in no time I was proven correct (for once).  Plus, I tied it in various colors and found that some worked better then others on certain streams and in different light conditions.  Since that time, the It’s-A-Bug has become a favorite fly when chasing warmwater species.

As it turns out, is also a great fly to start beginning fly ties on.  It has all the basic skills needed in fly tying, it is an easy pattern to master and in no time you can have a number of these tied and be on the water catching fish.  I actually included it in a Beginning Fly Tying class that I taught for a number of years at a local fly shop.

Over the years I have continued to experiment with this fly.  Using sparkle chenille or Estaz for the body instead of Rayon chenille, palmering a rooster hackle instead of rubber legs and even adding some flash in the tail for the smallmouth version.  All have caught fish but the standard It’s-A-Bug seems to catch more and it is so quick and easy to tie.

So, I published a video on YouTube on tying the It’s-A-Bug fly.  I think most viewers will agree it is a fun pattern to tie and even funner to fish.  If you would prefer to  purchase some It’s-A-Bug flies rather than tie your own, or perhaps you want one in your hand while you learn them, you can purchase some It’s-A-Bug flies here at Dressed Irons (while supplies last).  I have some panfish versions in Yellow and in Chartreuse on size 10 hooks (like in the video) and Smallmouth version in Yellow and in Chartreuse on a #4 hook.

As always, if you have any questions about this fly (or any other) you can leave a comment on Dressed Irons or any of the videos I have produced and I will help in anyway I can.   Enjoy!

Remember…..  It’s Fly tying…..  If you’re not having fun, You’re Doin’ It Wrong.
