I found the Shewey’s Spawning Purple to be a interesting fly to tie. The name can get twisted up sometimes but the way the fly is put together is pretty much straight forward. Many salmon and steelhead flies have the same basic components, tag, body, throat, wing, cheeks, etc… Many of these flies are put … Read more
This weeks fly is the Popsicle, sometimes called the Alaskabou Popsicle. I was introduced to this fly years ago when I started chasing steelhead and salmon in the great lakes. It is basically a bright “flesh” fly which are very popular in Alaska. I have not managed to catch any Midwest steelhead or salmon on … Read more
I tied the Rodger’s Fancy this week for two reasons. One, I wanted to do another salmon/steelhead fly and two, I like the look of this fly. I do not get to swing streamers to salmon very often or steelhead for that matter but it is my preferred method of chasing these fish. I particularly … Read more
The Christmas Jubilee fly is my way of showing how very much I appreciate everyones support over the past year. If you have been following any of my recent videos (in the last 6 to 8 weeks) then it will be no surprise as to where the idea and design for the 2019 version of … Read more
Rounding out the year 2019 is the Signal Light. Not certain how it “rounds out the year” but it sounded like a thing to say since it is the last fly tying video of the year. Anyway, the Signal Light is a staple pattern for salmon and steelhead and is a very fun fly to … Read more
This weeks fly tying video is the Green Butt Skunk. I wanted to do a few Salmon & Steelhead flies over the next few weeks and am starting with this one. The Green Butt Skunk is actually a variation of the original Skunk fly, another popular Steelhead fly. Basically, a couple wraps of Fl. Chartreuse … Read more
Carrie Stevens Lady Killer streamer is the last pattern in my recent series of Carrie Stevens flies. I ran across this fly in the book Carrie G. Stevens Maker of Rangeley Favorite Trout and Salmon Flies by Graydon R. Hilyard and Leslie K. Hilyard. Initially, I chose it because it caught my eye but after … Read more
The Doctor Gray is almost identical to another fly Carrie Stevens tied call the Doctor White. In fact they are both identical except the wing hackle is White in the Doctor White and Gray in the (you guessed it) Doctor Gray. I did find out that the Doctor Gray was named after a fishing friend … Read more
This weeks fly is another Carrie Stevens pattern (I have two more to go in this series) called the Golden Witch. The Golden Witch is very similar to another fly she created called the Demon. As I have mentioned throughout this series many of her patterns are similar to others with one or two material … Read more
The Supervisor is an interesting pattern of Carrie Stevens as she did not create it. The Supervisor was created by Joseph S. Stickney. He was not a fly tier himself but very much liked the flies that Carrie Stevens tied and had her tie the Supervisor for him. The original did not have the peacock … Read more
The Casablanca is one of four patriotic flies that Carrie Stevens created during WWII. I did not know this until I decided to tie this video this week and started to do some research. Unfortunately, I have not learned much more than that. I do not believe they were tied commercially but rather her small … Read more
